Madhesh University (MU), established on Bhadra 23, 2079 B.S., is a beacon of higher education in the Madhesh Province, dedicated to nurturing skilled manpower and fostering the all-round development of the nation. Rooted in the belief that quality education is the cornerstone of progress, the university plans to offer a diverse range of courses in art, science, medicine, tourism, Ayurveda, law, management, education, oriental philosophy, technical fields, and various other subjects.
The establishment of MU was driven by the vision to create an educational and academic environment that is characterized by excellence, integrity, and productivity. The provincial assembly of Madhesh Province enshrined this vision into reality through the formulation of an Madhesh University Act, which allowed for the establishment and operation of the university. The province’s gazette, on Baishakh 14, 2079, MU embarked on its journey to shape the future of countless students and contribute significantly to the progress and development of the nation.

MU is the founding member of the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) established in 2023 in Nepal. The RCE has been initiated globally by the University of United Nations, Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, Japan. With this affiliation MU has from very beginning conceptualized the environment sensitivity with less carbon emission as envisioned by Nepal Government. It aims to focus on life-skill and sustained livelihood based courses through culture-friendly pedagogy. Thus, MU is a unique university with special features to intervene in higher education incorporated by the Province Government of Madhesh. It undertakes culture-friendly pedagogy and very specific but open courses for life-skill and quality of livelihood development.
OBJECTIVE OF THE UNIVERSITY
- Conduct various teaching, training and research program as prescribed for the development of higher education, manage departments and research centers and to supervise and inspect the same.
- Certify the degree to the students, trainees or researchers who have obtained higher education from the University and to award honorary degrees to specific individuals.
- Establish relationships with national and international universities or educational institutions.
- Receive financial support from national and international educational and other institutions and individuals and hold educational exchange programs in accordance with prevailing laws.
- Make necessary arrange to award prize, scholarship and fellowships.
- Arrange and conduct various sports and welfare programs in the university.
- Certify the student, trainee and researcher who obtain degree from the constituent and affiliated campus of the University and also award honorary degree to special individual.
- Formulate rules and regulations as may be necessary for the University.
- Execute other necessary work for the betterment of the University and education system.
