Establishment & Legal Foundation

Madhesh University was established through the enactment of the Madhesh University Act, 2079, by the Provincial Assembly of Madhesh Province. The university was officially notified in the Provincial Gazette on Baisakh 14, 2079, marking a strategic step towards strengthening higher education, skill development, and research within the province.

Established by the Government of Madhesh Province, Madhesh University was envisioned as a transformative public institution to expand access to higher education, enhance enrollment ratios, and address skill gaps within the province while contributing to national development goals.

Madhesh University is the founding member of the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), established in Nepal in 2023 under the global initiative of the United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, Japan. From its inception, the university has integrated environment-sensitive, low-carbon academic practices in alignment with national priorities, with a strong emphasis on life-skill and sustainable livelihood–oriented education through culture-friendly pedagogy, making Madhesh University a distinct provincial public institution.
